Can this phone be saved?

I have a four year old Sony Xperia M which recently suffered some sort of internal meltdown. One morning I turned it on and one by one all the apps and processes shut down. I restarted the phone and it came up with a screen that says "type password to decrypt storage".

I have never set a password to decrypt storage, so obviously I don't know what it is. I have tried doing a factory reset by holding down various combinations of volume buttons and power button but it appears that this model didn't ship with this particular ability. The phone won't connect to the Xperia management software.

Is there any way to get the phone working again?

I can't vouch for it but I found these instructions and others by searching "type password to decrypt storage Sony Experia M".
