NYC area: volunteering by providing music lessons?

I'm not sure if this is even a thing, so I'm trying to find out if it is. I'm a huge believer in music education for schools, and have donated in the past to charities that provide schools with new instruments and other equipment. I'm also interested in volunteering my time - whether through a school or some other program - and wanted to know if there was a need or service where I could provide free guitar and/or drum lessons (either to individuals or groups). I live in the NYC area. Any suggestions?

There's a wonderful organization founded by cellist David Darling called Music for People. They train you to lead music discovery workshops with children or adults, with the precept that everybody is musical.

You can learn more about their approach with The Darling Conversations, and the book Return to Child.

You could try contacting charitable/non-profit organisations that offer classes to their clients directly.

I've taught music at a youth club for kids affected by HIV and AIDS, and also at a refuge for homeless woman. In both cases they were advertising for general volunteers, and I contacted to offer that specific skill set.

Check with New York cares. They work with several local institutions to coordinate volunteers - I know I've seen things like art activities for kids in the past.

I recently saw a sign up at my local library: "Guitar Class: 6PM." Maybe you could ask your local libraries if they'd let you give lessons there.

Also, afterschool programs.
