Hearing someone at work saying racial slurs when he is alone

So at work, I heard someone say a racial slur out loud to himself, it didn’t seem like it was directed at anyone, and this was in the lunch room as I was walking in, but this occurred 2 months ago. In another occasion, I was with a coworker and we were walking down the hall and we both heard this particular person say a racial slur out loud, but this was like 6 months ago. If I were to report this to HR, would it still be effective in getting this person in trouble, even though a long time has passed in both instances? Would the fact that me and someone else together heard this person say something carry any weight (Since there are now two people who witnessed this)? Is there someone from HR that can provide some insight?
