Lower-cost therapy options in DC

Does anyone know of any lower-cost psychotherapy options in DC? Or any good therapists in the area who accept any form of insurance?

I've been thinking of starting to see a therapist for anxiety, PTSD and general life stress issues. The problem is that I can't really afford to pay more than around $150-$200/month. I have great insurance (BCBS) with a wide network but it's hard to really tell who is good, given that few in-network therapists seem to have many reviews. Does anyone know of either a good therapist in the area who is in-network for any insurance or something like a lower-cost clinic or university program? I know some cities have these. I'm considering making an appointment at the Whitman Walker Clinic and would appreciate learning about any experiences there.

When I lived in DC, I saw Matthew FitzGerald PsyD for my anxiety and I am not exaggerating when I say he completely changed my life for the better. The practice he's at, Therapy Group of DC, is out-of-network but they electronically file all reimbursement paperwork for you. I would pay $200 at each appointment, and then got most of that back within 3 weeks from my insurance. I also had BCBS.

If the whole reimbursement thing isn't your jam, there is also the Capital Therapy Project, which charges $100 for an individual session. Still pricey, but much less so than most other private options.

Good luck.

I don't know if this is the case with BCBS, but with many other insurance companies, you can call them up and ask to speak with something along the lines of a 'care coordinator' to help you refine your search. They're usually able to help filter a good fit based on certain criteria. It's never perfect, but they'll be able to provide you a list with plenty of in-network providers. The big thing I found is that care coordinators can help cut through the list they have and find providers that are accepting new clients.

There's not really a way around 'shopping around' for a good therapist, unfortunately. It's a time suck that doesn't have a good solution. This is one of those areas where everyone's different. A 'good' therapist for me, might not be for you.

I keep hearing commercials for TalkSpace on my podcasts. They fit in your budget. Is that something you would consider?
