Fast movin', hard chargin' women
April 2, 2017 3:25 PM   Subscribe

My playlist is man-heavy. I need women who move. So far I have Marcia Ball (and more of her on hold at the library.) She's the best example of what I mean.

Another example: k.d. lang when she sang with The Reclines (A Truly Western Experience.) That music jumps!
I like Diana Krall and Bonnie Raitt when they pick up the pace, so they're on my playlist. Who else can I add?
I'm NOT looking for:

pokey folk
dreamy romance
confessional ballads
Karen Akers (love her low tone, but omg, does she slow everything down!)

Help me bring gender parity to my dog-walking playlist.

Grace Jones
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings
Indigo Girls

I'd plug some of the artists you mention into Pandora if you haven't already, and see what else comes up.

Maybe the Noisettes?

Their album What's the Time Mr. Wolf sounds like this, and Wild Young Hearts sounds more like this. (Contact is really good, too, but definitely getting into the too slow range, I think.)

Oh, wait, also The Breeders.

I've been grooving along to Sharon Jones and the Tedeschi Trucks Band doing "Tell Mama." Damn! Fast movin', hard chargin' women indeed. I don't know TTB as well as I should, but pretty much every upbeat Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings song should be on your playlist. Try "Stranger To My Happiness" and see whether it speaks to you.

Was going to say Dresden Dolls too, even though 50% male and who knows how you feel about weird kind of punky cabaret-like whatsit. But! Yeah

Le Tigre, CHVRCHES, Sleater Kinney, Neko Case (and The New Pornographers), Waxahatchee, MS MR, The Asteroids Galaxy Tour, St. Vincent, The Joy Formidable, The Knife. You may not like all of that, but it's a pretty broad range so you will probably find something to dig in there.

There are plenty of women who rock. But uptempo in the country- Americana vein from most-to-less genre-specific:

Joy by Lucinda Williams, always and forever.
Mama's Broken Heart by Miranda Lambert, guilty pleasure.
Untamed Beast from Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside
Lots from Hurray for the Riff Raff, some might be too croony for you.
We the Common from Thao and the Get Down Stay Down
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and all he aughts bands that I group with them in my mind: the Julie Ruin, Sleater-Kinney, Sleigh Bells

Response by poster: Whoa! AskFilter comes through!

For the record, I have Dresden Dolls, Nina Simone, Janis Joplin, and Chrissie Hynde's stuff already on my playlist, but I was happy to see them recommended because that shows you know exactly what I mean.
I've got a good week's worth of music exploring to do now. That'll be my dessert after the hard slog of doing taxes.
Thanks, everyone!

+1 for Sleater-Kinney, Garbage, The Julie Ruin, Courtney Barnett, St. Vincent and Tegan and Sara :) But also:

Brody Dalle (I miss The Distillers, but you might enjoy her new stuff more since you didn't specifically ask for hardcore punk)

Ex Hex because Mary Timony is amazing.

Wild Flag 2/3 of Sleater-Kinney + Mary Timony + Rebecca Cole. Only lasted for one album but it's an awesome one.

Halsey (not very happy stuff but I just can't not mention her)

Also Hunter Valentine Sick of Sarah Halestorm Paramore

And finally… L7! ARE! BACK!! (Just to play the old stuff for now, but at least we have concert videos from 2015,)

I put together this 200+ track Spotify playlist last year and am still adding to it: Female Fronted Alternative Rock, Indie, and Shoegaze. It's a combination of classic '90s plus recent releases, but the main criterion is definitely "music that moves."
