Having trouble using 5.1 computer speakers and a microphone at the same time.

I just bought some 5.1 speakers for my computer. I plugged them into the line in, rear, and center/subwoofer jacks, which resulted in the center speaker being very quiet and DVD dialogue almost inaudible. So, I switched to the second possible configuration: line in, line out, and microphone. Now the center works great, but when I plug in my microphone to the microphone jack on the front, it doesn't work. How can I either:

a) make both work at the same time

b) make the 5.1 slots on my sound card actually work properly, so the center speaker will go in the center/sub jack as it is meant to.

Response by poster: Well, I fixed it. The center/subwoofer jack needed switching around - the center was too quiet because it was getting the subwoofer feed.
