A giant pink and furry bunny! A naughty schoolgirl! A goth dentist! Strom Thurmond!

Oh wait. You must mean for polka-ing. Did you see this fabulous gallery of polka costume-sporting dancers?

In my brief, distracting-from-overdue-report search, I discovered that there exists in the world a cd compilation called Deep Polka. Surely a must have!

Are you looking into a specific sub-genre of polka? I can think of several; Polish, Czech and German are similar but all a little different from each other. There's a lot of country & western polka music, and also Mexican polka (both of which are descended from the polkas brought by Eastern Euro settlers to Texas and evolved from there, but have their own distinctive dress.)

Whatever will get me raised eyebrows at the Civic Center will make me happy.

I'm in Minnesota, so the local polka-ers are likely to be German or Northern European. But if there are polka costumes that are waaay cooler than what they wear, that's what I want.

My dream polka dress would be mostly the traditional shape, little shorter in the skirt and low-cut, maybe. Oversized blue houndstooth patterned fabric, with a wide snow white apron, one that goes over the chest as well as the skirt and ties in a big girly bow in the back. White cotton knee highs with blue pom poms on the outer knees(you can buy them at a craft store and sew them on, it's easy. safety pins work fine if you're lazy, too). Leg needs to be showing, tights won't do, thigh highs depending on how short the skirt it. If I did thigh-highs I wouldn't go with stay-ups, I'd wear a pure white stocking with a garterbelt. The clasps on the garterbelt that hold the stocking MUST be metal-I don't have a single garter belt with plastic clasps that doesn't have at least one broken clasp, and I hate stockings coming undone when I have other shit to do, like dance. Shoes I could dance in; I'm thinking something like these, except in a darker blue than the rest of the outfit. Pigtails probably. I have kind of weird taste though.

FWIW, I used to polka dance as a kid in a church group, and our costumes were mostly long colorful skirts with interesting aprons plus some sort of white blouse, puffiness optional, and a vest in a bright color that matched the skirt. Oh how I wish I could post a picture; we were really adorable. I imagine adult costuming is a bit different -- not so much on the floor length skirts, for example. You will want a skirt that can show a little bit of a swing to it, since swishing around is alot of the fun and the point of polka.

If you want to look authentic but with a modern edge (and I'm not really sure that's what you want, but it's probably what I would be trying to do, so . . .) I think you can't go wrong with a full, bright skirt and a vest that matches, plus a fetching white blouse.

Enjoy. "Pol-ka-step! Pol-ka-step!"

Or, if you want to go with the more traditional ornate approach, check this out (scroll down the page a bit for the women's costumes). If you are handy with a sewing machine, you might also get ideas from these on making your own on the cheap!.
