Do you know a flash-based music recommendation site?

Does anyone know the URL of a site where you entered a band you like and it showed connections to other bands based on a recommendation system? The whole thing was done in flash and looked very cool.

Best answer: Liveplasma

There's a similar thing on allmusic.com for actual band connections, not "you might like this" if you're at all cranky or unpredictable in your musical taste, as I seem to be: none of those suggestion sites tend to give me anything new that I like.

Specifically, and building on Chunder's answer : Gnoosic.

Response by poster: Thanks everyone - LivePlasma was what I was looking for, but those were all great. Too bad I won't get any real work done today :)

Maybe Pandora should have picked a more memorable name, as I see this question asked multiple times daily in different places, and no one can ever seem to remember what it was called. They know the service exists, they've even been there and used it, but the URL title still escapes them.

Apologies if this isn't a proper AskMe answer, but this comes up so often that I can't help but be interested in why the service's name just doesn't seem to "stick" at all.

RockDetector maybe?

Pandora wasn't the answer...and I have no problem remembering the URL or service.

it's a cool idea, but I have to note to anyone intrigued by the thread that this site gave me some of the worst band recommendations I've ever been given (I came across it posted on AskMe a while back). Just so's you know.

Epitonic's far less cute (& no longer really active), but their suggestions are pretty good.

I know it wasn't. And you, and the other guy twice, so that's two and a half. It should, at the least, make you feel better about yourself, for knowing. Just something of interest to me, is all. But I'm just one, so who knows :P

Veering back on topic sorta, it interests me also that there is so much of a demand now for this type of service. Does it mean that there's too much music out now to sift through? Does it mean that most of it just sucks, making an auto-recommendation site a more valuable thing? These are things I ponder as a working professional musician, and probably are best pondered about somewhere besides AskMe, I know. So, moving on.

First Post -- speaking for myself, having collected most of the output of my favorite bands, I wanted to find related stuff.

Why now? It is far easier, these days, to get pretty much all the specific cds/albums you're looking for than it used to be. I used to browse record shops and look for particular items, and come away disappointed -- these days, between peer-to-peer networks, iTunes, and Amazon, finding that "rare" album, book or movie has become pretty easy.

So once you've got all your favorite movies on DVD, all your favorite bands, all your favorite authors, what do you do? Start looking at lists like the 1001 movies you must see before you die, or seeing what related titles pop up when you click on your favorites...

This is a little late, but I didn't mean to be snarky, First Post. Sincere apologies if I came off that way. In answer to your other question, I agree with cps. I like Pandora especially for this purpose because it explores the "Long Tail" based on the structure and composition of the music I give it, so the results are better tailored to my tastes than Amazon, which is based on others' buying habits.

@otis - wtf? Wrong thread, perhaps? rif.org is "Reading Is Fundamental" - "The nation's largest children's literacy organisation!"

Perhaps they have a hidden section for performing music searches? :-)

It was a joke. **holds up card saying 'joke'**

see, since pandora.com was already mentioned and thoroughly discussed and, aw, forget it.

Soz dude! :-) I just read them as extra recommendations (kinda like the "I second the 'Pandora' nomination" thing)...
