We Are All Going To Die: 2017 Inauguration Playlist
January 16, 2017 10:21 AM   Subscribe

I'm putting together a playlist to get me through this weekend. The theme is: we are all going to die/everything is terrible/this is a disaster/the end of civilization as we know it. Connections can be tenuous, lyrical/topical fit less important than the one moment of "HA! This song! Perfect!" Songs so far include REM's "It's the End of the World As We Know It," The Homeless Gospel Choir's "Armageddon," Def Leppard's "Armageddon It." Not interested in generic depressing/downbeat songs or overly sincere songs or even hopeful ones. Bitter laughs preferred.

Party at Ground Zero is a cold war song that is only sort of relevant these days.

The Dead Flag Blues seems custom made for this occasion. Not really that funny, though. See also, the entirety of Godspeed and A Silver Mt. Zion's catalog.

edit: oops, just read the last sentence stipulation. This one is downbeat and depressing, although I don't know about generic.

"Will the moon explode pt 2" by The 23rd Century is another one I thought about recently. It's not on YouTube but it's on iTunes.
It's about the planet's anxiety that moonquakes signal the imminent destruction of the moon and they're like "I don't know what they have to discuss. Will someone get up there and find out what's happening before it erupts? Everyone sees the pattern, but nobody's in the mood to do anything about it. Will the moon be the moon when we see it again? Will the sky swallow everything til everything's dead?"

The Clash is good for this sort of mood:

London Calling
The ice age is coming, the sun is zooming in
Meltdown expected, the wheat is growin' thin
Engines stop running, but I have no fear
'Cause London is drowning, and I, I live by the river

White Riot
All the power's in the hands
Of people rich enough to buy it

Koka Kola
Elevator! Going up!
In the gleaming corridors of the 51st floor
The money can be made if you really want some more
Executive decision, a clinical precision
Jumping from the windows, filled with indecision

Remote Control
Big business, it don't like you
It don't like the things you do

Career Opportunities
Career opportunities, the ones that never knock
Every job they offer you is to keep you out the dock

Bruce Springsteen's "Wrecking Ball" might have a little to much fight left in it, but it's got the bitterness.
Now when all this steel and these stories, they drift away to rust
And all our youth and beauty, it's been given to the dust
And your game has been decided, and you're burning down the clock
And all our little victories and glories, have turned into parking lots

Less tenuously, there's plenty of Billy Bragg to choose from, but let's go with this one:
Goodbye and good luck to all the promises you've broken
Goodbye and good luck to all the rubbish that you've spoken

You simply MUST have:

World Destruction by Afrika Bambaataa (Time Zone) and John Lydon (PIL)

These are just some of the incredibly-relevant lyrics:

This is a world destruction, your life ain't nothing.
The human race is becoming a disgrace.
Countries are fighting with chemical warfare.
Not giving a damn about the people who live.
Nostradamus predicts the coming of the Antichrist.
Hey, look out, the third world nations are on the rise.
The Democratic-Communist Relationship,
Won't stand in the way of the Islamic force.
The CIA is looking for other detectives.
The KGB is smarter than you think.
Brainwash mentalities to control the system.
Using TV and movies - religions of course.
Yes, the world is headed for destruction.
Is it a nuclear war?
What are you asking for?

World Party- Ship of Fools

We're setting sail to a place on the map
From which no-one has ever returned
Drawn by the promise of the joker and the fool
By the light of the crosses that burned
Drawn by the promise of the wormen and lace
And the gold and the cotton and pearls
It's the place where they keep all the darkness you need
You sail away from the light of the world on this trip, baby

You will pay tomorrow
You're gonna pay tomorrow
You will pay tomorrow

Oh, save me, save me from tomorrow
