I bought a slice of key lime pie 8 days ago, on December 21. It has been in my refrigerator ever since. Can I eat it?! Would you? Please say yes.

Best answer: After a smell test I'd do a taste test with a very small sample .. and might eat it.

Best answer: Let it warm up a bit on the counter and give it a good smell. If it has gone off you will be able to tell, but most key lime pies don't have many ingredients that would spoil so quickly in the fridge like that.

Best answer: I'd eat it as long as there's no whipped (dairy) component.

If there is, I'd probably scrape it off and eat it anyway.

Best answer: I would eat this without even thinking about it.

Best answer: Think about the last time you got food poisoning. How much would you have paid to not experience that?

If it is more than the cost of the Key Lime Pie slice then go get a new slice of pie.

Best answer: If it's not melty and gross and separated, then yeah, it's fine.

Best answer: Oh yeah, I'd eat it. Not with particularly high expectations of deliciousness, but also without any paranoia about impending illness.

Best answer: Google says 6-8 days if it's freshly baked and refrigerated. So assuming it smells and tastes OK, go should scarf that down asap before it gets to nine days.

Best answer: Take a small bite. If it tastes good, then eat the rest.

Response by poster: I have eaten it, after letting it sit for a few as Mizu suggested and finding it still delightfully tempting. I will keep you posted on how this goes. Thanks everyone!

Best answer: As ever to be the not-so-fun-food-spoilage-guy, passing the smell test doesn't mean it's safe. The bacteria that causes the rotted food smell will most likely make you sick but the bacteria that causes outright food poisoning (E. coli, Salmonella, etc.) doesn't necessarily have any smell.

Also consider how many days it sat in the store before being sold. Was it that morning or could it have been half a week before?

You're probably fine but you're definitely in the danger zone.

Response by poster: Update: I think it went OK. I've had a little bit of a gurgly stomach last night and this morning, but I can't rule out confounding factors on that, since I also ate: 1. a cold piece of leftover takeout tandoori chicken, 2. a microwaved tray of frozen chicken tikka masala and rice, 3. slices of cranberry cheddar on Triscuits, 4. a ginger perry, 5. several Bell's Two Hearted ales. (Last night was kind of catch as catch can leftovers dinner.) I still stand by my choice to have eaten this slice of pie.

Best answer: There ya' go! Live dangerously. What can happen? It's 2016, and it's not like there isn't affordable health care for the next 2 months, amirite?
