Editing aesthetics course

Any good online courses on video editing aesthetics?

My dad has discovered video photo albums (set of photos with transitions set to music). Unfortunately these videos are 20-40 minutes long and could be more engaging. He also ignores any (very gently put) criticism as to 'maybe the rotating flying photo coming in from the left side isn't the best... it makes everybody seasick'. He knows how to use the software. What he lacks is a sense of more overarching editing principles. Do courses (online?) teaching this exist?

You might check out How to Shoot Video That Doesn't Suck: Advice to Make Any Amateur Look Like a Pro.

The problem is the length, not the rotating flying photos. No one has ever been happy about sitting through a slide show. That book will help but one of the biggest pieces of advice in the book is make your videos shorter, and people might actually watch them.
