id an anime

I saw this anime movie in a theater between ten and twenty years ago. All I remember is 1) it featured a team of scientists of some sort one of whom is an enormously obese man that another, female, team member falls in love with, and 2) it includes extremely mind-blowing sequences that I took to be manifestations of the unfiltered subconscious mind of one of the characters.
