Long-shot identify this quote for me, please. "don't you understand? This land is flat because of the war" from a novel, this was an extract played on CBC radio about 15 years ago. The scene was two women driving through the part of France affected by World War I and it talked a lot about the effect of the war on the land. I don't remember anything else, but it's a good bet the author was Canadian.

Best answer: Foreign Parts by Janice Galloway?

Rona said nothing.
It's flat because of the war.
Rona said nothing.
The war. They bombed it all to hell. That's why it's like that. And the book hardly mentions it. It doesn't bother.
