Childhood book from the 50's

Want to identify a book I loved as a kid in the 50's. I think it involved 2 kids, a boy and a girl, who spent some time on ranches in Montana and New Mexico.
There were lots of illustrations of horse tack and cowboy gear. I think it may have been about 9"x12". That is really all I can remember. If you can think of anything even close, I will happily explore all suggestions,
Response by poster: Not sure about the illustrations. Did not see anything like my memory in her works, but thanks.

Henry's Mustang was published in 1966 and San Domingo in 1972.

One of the popular children's horse book authors of that time was Glenn Balch, and he wrote a series of books in the late 1940s through the 1960s called the Tack Ranch series, about a brother/sister duo of ranch kids named Ben and Dixie. Take a look and see if any of these ring a bell.

Best answer: Almost positive you are thinking of "The Book of Cowboys" by Holling C. Holling. A boy and a girl spend a summer on a working ranch. Quite a bit of detailed drawing of gear and technical explanations of a cowboys job. Holling C. Holling was a wonderful writer.

If you haven't read it, there's also his The Book of Indians. (Thank you for this question; it prompted memories of being a kid reading my grandmother's copies of these books.)
