Getting keys for 2012 Honda without any existing keys

Someone close to me has lost the only key to her 2012 Honda. Assuming they will never be found and there are (just go with me here), what's the cheapest way to get new keys made? I suppose it doesn't have to be electronic if that will save $$$.

She lives a thousand miles from the dealership that sold it, but we haven't called the local dealership yet.

Also the car is locked and in a safe place where it can remain indefinitely.

Response by poster: Uh, should read "there are no other keys," sorry.

Best answer: The local dealership can make you a key. When I did it I had to bring a copy of my registration I think. It was easy. That was a Toyota though.

For the record, when I lost my keys it was because I dropped them into a stack of roughly 6,000 hay bales. They were gone.

Response by poster: Thanks - should have specified that I'm sure the dealer can make new keys, but was hoping for a sub-$500 option (my Toyota is $150/key, plus $200+ to rekey the car for remote unlock.)

Best answer: It's good to hear it's been found. She should go ahead and get a spare made in the immediate future in case it does genuinely get lost.

Modern cars require that the key have a transponder chip in them or they won't start the engine. I don't have experience doing it with Hondas, but this indicates the programming of the chip is something you can do yourself as long as you have a working key with a chip already.

Glad the keys have been found. Dealership is really the best option in this situation, and that's a very good thing... if it was cheap and easy to get a key made for a car that has no keys, well, there'd be a hell of a lot more car theft.
