Epson scanner driver needed but it's not installing properly

I have an Epson 2480 flatbed scanner but have recently acquired a newish MacBookPro (mid-2012) running El Capitan and it doesn't work with it. My Brother printer needed a new driver, which installed properly and it works fine. I went to the Epson site and downloaded a driver it said I needed but it doesn't install properly.
I've been working my way through all the family photos and really need a scanner, and I need a flatbed with film/slide capability, which the Epson has. My old Mac iBook was 10.6 and had some PowerPC software, which may be having an effect. What do I need to try now to get the scanner to work, or do I need to buy a new scanner for about $180? I did check the archive but the most recent on this topic is 2011. This is my first Ask (yay!).

Best answer: Yeah VueScan is about $40, but works well.

Response by poster: Thank you so much. I've downloaded it and will be dragging the scanner out, plugging it in, and installing VueScan. Fingers crossed.

Response by poster: So I had to throw away the El Capitan download because this morning I upgraded to Sierra. But I've downloaded the trial version and will give it a try soon. Thanks again.

Response by poster: Sorry this took so long but I'm a champion procrastinator. Anyhow, installed the trial version and gave it a page to scan and it did. Yay! Of course, this is the trial version so it embeds a watermark on everything, but I'll get the full version soon. Both of you gave the same answer, so both get full marks. Thanks again.
