What kind of cheese did I eat on New Year's Eve? I love cheese of almost any nature, and will even buy cheese when I have no idea what it is, as I did on New Year's Eve. The label said nothing but "Gourmet Cheese," and the lady at the deli counter was as baffled as I was. Here's what I do know about it:

- It was cut as a round slice from a long log.
- The inside was pale yellow, shading to a darker yellow near the rind. There were no veins, and no bubbles or holes.
- The rind itself was orange-brown and "crinkly" in texture, with soft white mold. It looked inedible, but turned out to be soft and tasty.
- The cheese had an odor similar to a blue, but not overpoweringly pungent.
- The texture was extremely crumbly.
- The flavor was like that of a blue cheese, but very creamy and buttery. The crumbles practically dissolved in my mouth, and melted on my tongue.

All told, the cheese struck me as familiar, and I think I had it on a salad once before, but I can't place it. Pictures of the Mystery Cheese are here. So what was it? Can any MeFi turophiles help me out?

Well, it looks like a goat cheese for sure, but beyond that I'm a bit stuck...

Lacking more conclusive evidence, I'm going with the bucheron hypothesis. I never even would have known it was goat cheese to begin with. You guys rule!

Well, just to reassure you that you're going with the right hypothesis--if it's not bucheron, it's exactly like bucheron.

Weird. My NYE was spent with a friend consuming five different cheeses from Murray's. Best New Year's ever, as far as I'm concerned.

I saw a sheep and a goat cheese that looked exactly like this last time I was at the store. The only difference was one was round and the other square.

FoB, I salute you! I don't know too many people who would buy something marked like a generic spread, then eat its suspect rind mold to boot. Do you have (or are you) a taster?

Taster? I'm not certain what that means. I just like cheese.
