Can you recommend any good free Windows 7 photo gallery program in 2016?

My dad wants to move his several-year long collection of photos from his aging/dying Macbook to his pretty new Windows 7 laptop. I haven't used Windows regularly in a long time, and the last time I did I used Picasa for my photo gallery software, but it looks like Google stopped supporting/offering it some time ago. Does anyone have any free (or very cheap) alternatives you could recommend?

My dad has tried Windows 8 and 10 but had extreme difficulty figuring out how to use them so he's still using Windows 7 and his gallery software would have to be able to run on that version.

Also, I mentioned to him that Adobe offers a pretty cheap monthly subscription to Lightroom but he said that, since he's retired and on a fixed income now, he would prefer something free if possible, or pretty damn cheap if not.

I know these are some tough constraints so if there's nothing really that fits the bill, I understand and thanks for your help.

The Windows Live Photo Library that is part of the "Windows Essentials" software suite isn't unusably terrible. (download here)

I never really got very deep into the features it was missing (or had) compared to other software, I primarily used it just for the organization and tagging.

Daminion is free for up to 15,000 photos per catalog (you can have multiple catalogs. Runs on XP on up.)

Imatch has a 30 day trial, $110 to buy. It's very good.

Both have been in development for 15+ years.

XnView could do the trick. And it's free.

I'm not sure exactly what he's after, but Fastone Image Viewer is great for a lot of things, and is free (although a donation is requested and in my opinion worthwhile).

Best answer: Adobe Bridge is free to install (you just need a Creative Cloud account) and it works well as an image browser/viewer/organizer. It won't edit the photos aside from metadata though.

Best answer: Picasa is still available at FileHippo. Be sure to use the green button on the right to download the install file. I still use it on my Windows 10 machine. If you don't want to use it, then AgentCorvid's answer of Windows Live Photo Gallery would be my second choice.

Response by poster: Thanks for the suggestions, all! I think Bridge might be best since he's having some trouble importing pictures from his camera that the Adobe flow is helping with, but Picasa should have some more functionality for editing etc. that Bridge would lack.
