Help me find a childhood book question: dinosaur edition

In grade school, my friend read a children's book about a female allosaurus. "The basic story was that the allosaurus was extremely hungry and had to hunt other animals to feed itself, but she was also too old to catch any prey. So at the end the allosaurus starved to death. That was, literally, the plot. A dinosaur learns that life is cruel and then dies." Ring any bells?

Best answer: Is this it?

(Oh man, I'm pretty sure I had the same book and had forgotten all about it till literally this moment.)

Good grief. I am one of those self-righteous people who proclaim "children shouldn't be protected from bad feelings, dark is necessary for light, blah blah blah." Then I saw this. Just looking at the pictures through the link and reading the story line thoroughly bummed me out. Kids had access to this book? Surely not.

Upon rereading my response, I wonder if it has such an impact since I'm an elderly female. Hmm. At any rate, I'm going to try to find a copy of this. True horror! Thanks!

Kestralwing...
I read a whole series of North American animal books that were rather grim like that. There was a moose, alligator and otter as I recall. I watched a lot of nature shows as a kid so I probably didn't think it too grim.

OP, I'm glad you found your book!
