What was this thing I can't remember?

About 2-3 weeks ago, I saw one or two sentences that read something like this: "[RECENT THING was marketed at [COOL/YOUNG DEMOGRAPHIC] but turned out wildly popular with middle-aged white women instead."

It might have said "40+ Midwestern women" or something like that. The basic gist was SUBURBAN WHITE MOMS liked this thing that theoretically they would or should not.

I know this is not much to go on, but it's driving me nuts. I can't remember anything about what it was - a product, service, etc. I don't know if I saw it here, on Facebook, Twitter? Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Response by poster: No, and wasn't that years ago? I'm pretty positive this was a very recent thing.

I recall things like this being said about Pinterest, but years ago when Pinterest was still under the radar.

LaCroix was the opposite (the soda choice of Midwestern moms is now very popular with hip youngsters, is meme-worthy, etc.) but there was a link for this on the blue a few weeks ago.

I've seen at least 4 articles in this format about Pokemon Go.

Definitely read something very similar about La Croix, down to Midwestern middle-aged women. But it wasn't about initial marketing, but rather about the recent (6 mo) pivot towards young people.

I think I'm thinking of this Vox article, though.

Response by poster: Definitely NOT La Croix or Pokemon Go. The music thing maybe? It was something like that, but it wasn't that article. Let me see if I can find more about that. More ideas welcome!

Response by poster: I'll try to expand a bit, but I don't know how substantial this is. I think what I read was a blurb, probably on Twitter. It may not have specifically said that there was a different intended target demographic. I just remember reading it and thinking that I wasn't surprised at the popularity among middle aged women and I didn't know why anyone would be. I just kind of remember thinking "duh, and?" and moving on. No idea why it's bugging me so much that I can't remember it.

Young Adult fiction in general, in specific: Twilight, Hunger Games.

Game of Thrones, Outlander

Deadpool, Finding Dory, Ghostbusters

Minions! (though I guess they aren't marketed as "hip")

Response by poster: OK, I found it. It was this radio station.

But I didn't originally read the article - I only saw a link/blurb with some commentary and never clicked through. Either I mistakenly assumed there was some surprise, or maybe that commentary was in the link I saw. Sorry, I thought it was something national that more people would have seen.

The suggestion that it was music was super familiar so I googled every possible combination of women, music, hip hop, rap, and different ages. Thanks to everyone!

I can vouch for that. There's a new "throwback hip-hop and R&B" station in my area and I'm enjoying it immensely. It's my jam, as the young folks say. As a middle-aged white woman, I am fulfilling that particular click-bait headline!

I was once on a really long 8 hour car drive with my husband and we stumbled upon a radio station that was playing All Da Hits. I was bopping along, repeatedly shouting "That's my JAM!". And then the radio channel call said something like, "This isn't your parent's classics, these are YOUR classics." and I immediately responded "Oh my god I'm an Old." :(
