Gmail labels missing in Safari on Mac

I recently switched from Chrome to Safari on my MacPro desktop (OSX El Capitan). When I view my Gmail in the Safari browser, all the labels (tags) on previous emails are missing.

All the labels are present on emails when looking at the same account in Safari on my iPad. The labels are still there in Chrome, and also if I open the account in Firefox. If I add a new label to an email in Safari, it sticks. I just can't see any of the ones I've previously added. All my labels are marked "Show" in both the Labels list and the Message list.

How do I get the labels to show up in Safari?

Switch back to Chrome. Safari is for people who enjoy experiencing this kind of little paper cut every. single. day.

Response by poster: "Google Chrome Helper" was killing my CPU and rendering my computer nearly useless without constant rebooting. But that's not the problem I asked about. Not going back to Chrome. May try Firefox.

Do you have any extensions installed in Safari?
Does this happen if you login to Gmail in a fresh Private Browsing window?
