What is a suitable alternative to Togethera?

My extended family is a large one and distributed over North America and Western Europe. Up until now we have been using Togethera as a means to share photographs and stay in informal contact. Unfortunately, Togethera have today sent out an email announcing the termination of their service. Is there an obvious alternative social network that can fill this gap?

The appeal of the service is that it:
  • is accessible from mobile devices (many family members do not own a desktop)
  • is private to just the family
  • keeps us separate from facebook

Is it Facebook you want to avoid, or all large companies? Google Photos is pretty good.

I'm using Dropbox for this.

Telegram works for this. You can set up a group chat and share pictures and video very easily.

A private Flickr account would work too. Pretty much all the photo hosting services will allow you to limit access to photos.

Forgive me if this is obvious, but if folks all have iPhones you can use iCloud photo sharing. That's what my family does.

My extended family created a private WhatsApp group. Works great.

We are Slack users (Slackers?) and it works fine for this purpose.

A lot of families here seem to keep a group WhatsApp conversation sort of constantly running. They have a web application now and photos can easily be transferred from the app to phones.
