How to get motion-activated pics of an animal?

An animal's den has appeared. Gophers which were near the den before have disappeared. There are bobcats and foxes around here and now and then scat turns up that doesn't belong to a domestic pet. I would like to get a few pictures of this new resident.

Here is the den. It's in the San Lorenzo Valley near Santa Cruz, CA. The den is in a small hill with several old redwood stumps and is surprisingly close to the house. It is certainly not a small hole, it is perhaps eight inches in diameter so the critter is of decent size, matching the scat. Plants in the picture are euphorbia and poison oak.

Foxes will walk on the deck now and then. My (100% inside) cat becomes very excited when she sees any new creature, and she has not become excited about outside animals recently.

The search term you're looking for is "trail camera."

Here is an Amazon search page for trail cameras. Looks like one can be had for as little as ~$40.

I recently bought that $40 Primos cam that's the first item in Betelgeuse's link. It works and is relatively easy to set up, but be aware that it puts a watermark frame around the images.
For $40 and the cost of a SD card, it's a neat toy. If you just want to see what the animal is, this will do the trick

This is the exact purpose of a trail camera, like Betelgeuse mentions.

Sometimes these are also called a game camera, BTW.

If you have an outdated Android or iPhone lying around, you can install the motion-activated Presence app for free.

outdated Android or iPhone lying around

Moisture from dew or rainfall would kill almost all outdated phones. Trail camera/game camera is the way to go.

Agreed! (Unless it can be pointed out a window, which works well for our back door.)
