Version 2.01--homebrewable?

PSPFilter: I recently received a Playstation Portable for Christmas, and I want to "homebrew" the thing so I can play games, movies, etc. I've been reading up on how to do this, but my version is 2.01, and what I've read so far leads me to believe it to be an impossibility. Anyone try this with v. 2.01?

I got it in Japan, if that makes a difference.

It looks like some people have Hacked 2.01 but it seems that they are only porting games for people, not providing a way for people to do it themselves.

A link was posted on BoingBoing a few days ago about a huristic to tell what version your PSP would be (based on the box). Maybe you could try to return your PSP and get a new one that will be hackable?

The Boing Boing posted hack lets you "reverse the software to 1.5 and then all is well (IIRC)

it seems like you are unlucky, 2.01 is not downgradable

As a point of semantics, "homebrewed" software (not made by a software company and distributed) is what would be run on a hacked device. You're looking to see if the device can be 'hacked' or 'unlocked'.

Think homebrewed beer-- just PSP won't let you drink that beer that you (or someone else) made without going through some major hoops(hacks). PSP only runs Sony-approved beer in a special Sony stein.

GameFaqs has an ongoing thread discussing how to downgrade/upgrade your PSP firmware, what games you can put on it, and, most importantly, the risks involved with playing home brew software.

Suffice to say, use the wrong programme and your PSP becomes little more than a paperweight.

I wouldn't worry too much...it's just a matter of time before someone comes out with something that cracks/hacks/whatevers v2.01 so it supports homebrew games/emulators. I'd give it a couple weeks before doing anything drastic...
