Howdy Hive, i have been attempting to learn several songs for guitar via streaming which is a pain. It would be great if i can just download them. Is there an app or method you can recommend that downloads youtube videos?

If you've got brew, "brew install youtube-dl" and then "youtube-dl [url]".

If you're not using brew, I'm sure there's another way to install it.

The tool works on a surprising number of sites, not just youtube.

If you're having problems playing videos, try VLC.

Response by poster: Brew seems to be somewhat out of my league. Thanks though

ClickToFlash is a plug-in for Safari whose purpose is to prevent vids made with Flash player from playing until you click on them, and/or render them in html5 or QuickTime. (Flash & OSX don't play well together, so keeping vids from loading can help pages load faster, use less CPU, etc.) A sort of auxiliary benefit is that once you've got the video playing, you can right click on it and get an option to download.

If you're on a mac, I like the app 4K Video Downloader.

No idea how well Click to Flash works on iPads, though, sorry.

Just put "ss" in front of the url (after the www., put the "ss" right there, right before the youtubexxx part). It will take you to a website that lets you download. There is always some solution like this, occasionally they get shut down and then reopened in a new website with a slightly different process. Some googling will tell you what the current iteration is. As of 08 May 2016 this still works. Right now the service is called http://en.savefrom.net/

I use youtube-dl, too. It's just a python script, actually, if that helps. No fancy install required. (If you have python -- which is easy & free to get -- you can download the youtube-dl source code, navigate in a console to the folder youtube_dl where __main__.py is and run it with python __main__.py + the target url.)

2nding VLC for playing back the videos.
