Romantic evening in London in mid-May. I'd like some recommendations on classy restaurants.

So, Mrs. Lips and I will be in London for our 5th Anniversary. We'll be staying at the DoubleTree Dockside (Rotherhithe / Canary Wharf area) and would like some recommendations on where we can have a nice anniversary dinner. We'll be dining on a Saturday evening.

Requirements:
- Relatively simple to get to from the hotel - we will not have a car but can navigate the Tube, bus or taxis within a reasonable distance.
- Must be relatively quiet and romantic - light ambient restaurant noise is fine but no live/loud music.
- Should have a decent selection of both steak and seafood.
- Upscale is preferred. Within decent reason, cost is not a concern.
- I'd prefer to make reservations online.

Bonus if they have crème brûlée for dessert :)

Thanks for any suggestions!

Response by poster: Forgot to add - we're not going to lug along dressy clothes for three weeks just for one night's use. I don't want to be out of place or scorned at if I'm in blue jeans and a polo, which is as dressy as I'll be prepared for.

La Poule au Pot Considered London's most romantic restaurant by many, a short walk from Sloane Square tube

Try Odette's in Primrose Hill, see if you can get a table in the garden for extra romantic atmosphere...

I like the Cinnamon Club in Westminster. It's a fusion of Indian and European. It is white tablecloth but the staff will make you feel welcome regardless of attire.

(However, if you are going to be in London in two weeks, consider bringing a long-sleeved collared shirt, not to be dressier but because it won't necessarily be very warm. It snowed in the north of England a few days ago!)

Just to add: the times I have eaten at the Cinnamon Club, it has been relatively quiet, and the old library is an elegant setting.

Rules will give you an old school traditionally British experience - accessible via the Tube and very good (if slightly pricy) food.

La Chapelle in Shoreditch

In your neighbourhood you have Simplicity for a low key evening at a local bistro which I highly recommend.

Neither is going to be fussed about dress code.

Best answer: That's a nice hotel, I stayed there a couple of weeks ago. Directly from reception, there's a ferry that takes you over to the jetty on the other side of the river, at Canary Wharf.

Problem with Canary Wharf is that it's pretty much dead in the evening - it's mainly offices. There are restaurants, but they'll be full of City boys in suits. Probably not the atmosphere you'll want.

But from the same jetty at Canary Wharf, you can get a fast & comfortable boat (search for Thames Clippers) that takes you right along the river - as far as Putney if you like - you get a much better sense of the river & the bridges & all the buildings along there than you ever do from the embankment. On the south bank, there's a nice stretch between Blackfriars Bridge & Waterloo with several good places to eat - maybe the Oxo Tower (great views, could be a good choice for an anniversary dinner, and it's certainly upscale), or a few different / less-formal places at Gabriel's Wharf.

Everywhere serves steak (also nearly everywhere has creme brulee for pudding), but if you're looking specifically for a choice of steaks - try Smiths of Smithfield - opposite the old meat market.
