Making a one-time payment over phone channel that might not be secure

Is there a way to make a one-time payment over the phone without compromising your account, if it turned out to be unsafe?

You need to make a payment over the phone, and it might not be secure. Is there any payment system that lets you generate numbers that could serve as a check, where if it went wrong, the only amount even temporarily at risk would be the amount you meant to pay? Assume also that you don't want to deal with having to replace a credit card, and you need a clear record of payment, which is something the organization isn't too helpful about.

Is there a way to do this?

Best answer: With my Bank of America Visa, there's something called ShopSafe , which let's you get a temporary credit card number with a dollar limit and expiration date you choose. It has all the protection and records a credit card provides. I'm sure other credit cards have something similar.

Many single-use credit card gift cards have online management. The card's limit is only what you put on there, and it's not linked to your bank account.
