Wop-wop-wop laser sound effect?

Laser rifles in the game Helldivers have a distinctive 'wop-wop-wop-wop' sound that's very familiar, but I can't place it. I thought it might be from Dune or Terminator, but no luck. Anybody recognise it?
Several of the samples on this page sound similar.
It's likely a sound heavily processed and custom to the game.

Reminded me of a less-fuzzy version of Chopper Command laser effects.

It sounds like the heavy turrets of a capital ship from some sci-fi thing but I can't pinpoint which one. Babylon 5 maybe?
