Where to buy a house in Baltimore?

Asking for my wonderful 30-year-old lady friend. She's moving to Baltimore in a few months and would like to buy a house there. She would like to live somewhere between Hunt Valley and downtown Baltimore, she's okay with either a city or suburban feel, and her budget is $160k. Safety is her top concern, and she's having trouble getting an accurate sense of how safe particular neighborhoods are from her realtor and her research. Can you recommend specific Baltimore neighborhoods that are safe for a young female homebuyer?

(I've seen this and this, but both are several years old at this point.)

How about Towson.

I lived in Baltimore for years. There are "safe" enclaves in just about every neighborhood, so this is really difficult to answer. Also, Hunt Valley is well outside the city, so you're actually talking about a variety of different towns here. If she is just moving to the area completely blind I would really recommend renting for a year first so she gets a feel for different neighborhoods and areas.

There's not enough detail to make a good recommendation. Can she narrow it down at all? The geographic range has every type of living situation, and 160k will not go far unless she's willing to buy a condo or a row house that likely needs renovation.

For example, if she chooses to live in a walkable city area with lots of access to restaurants and shopping, 160k is on the low end of fixer-uppers in Medfield and Hampden. Or 160k will get her a 1BR condo in Towson near the mall.

There's a city-only site called livebaltimore.com she can check out for amenities. I suggest she team up with a realtor. Joy Sushinsky at Long and Foster knows Hampden and surroundings very well.
