Neighborhoods to Airbnb in Sydney Australia...

Will be passing through Sydney for four days in September and want to rent an apartment.  What neighborhoods in or near the city should we consider?

Have already spent time in the CBD, so would like to explore a different area.

Preferences: water view or near the water, walking distance to cafes and restaurants would be nice.  Prefer not to be close to touristy, or noise/ night clubs, etc.

Bottom line is we'd to stay in a  pleasant part of the city where we can enjoy strolling / exploring by foot.

Neutral Bay, Cremorne and Balmain all seem reasonable. But different.

Glebe, Pyrmont. Whatever you do, don't go Bondi, it's a PITA to get to.

I used to often stay at Harbourside Apartments in the Lavender Bay / McMahons Point area. These serviced apartments are right on the waterfront (there is a ferry stop basically at the end of the driveway and it has its own little jetty).

It sounds like you want an AirBnb so that specific place may not be of interest, but the surrounding area has great water, bridge and city views, a train station not too far away and easy walk over the bridge if you like, and is not a touristy or nightlifey area (except a bit of shrieking from Luna Park). There is a good strip of restaurants along Blues Point Road - I used to love getting the garlic prawn pizza from Blues Point Gourmet Pizza and taking it down to the hotel jetty with a couple of ciders.

It doesn't really have swimmable beach, but there are some walks with great waterviews. There is also Wendy Whitely's (wife of late Brett Whitely) secret garden.

I'm sure some might tune in to say there is not much for tourists in this neighbourhood, but it is a nice little neighbourhood with amazing views.

Bondi is yes, a PITA - however it does have a buttload of restaurants. But also, touristy.

Clovelly, Bronte, Coogee. Randwick is not right on the water, but you'll be able to see it from some places. And the coastal walk can't be beat, you can walk right from Bondi to Maroubra if you have the stamina.

Glebe is lovely but it's not beach-y water, if that's your bag. But very close to the city.

Balmain is lovely in an upper middle-class sort of way, plenty of eatings, and there's the ferry.

Woolloomoolloo is nice, the water is dominated by navy-stuff but it's very good-looking. Total inner city life, I wouldn't say the walking compares to the coastal ones of the eastern beachy subs but you'll have your choice of places to eat around the Potts Point/Cross area. However the recent lockout laws have screwed the night life so there's that.

Manly is nice but...so far away. But the ferry's good I suppose. I'm pretty biased in favour of spots not on that side of the harbour bridge. I wouldn't enjoy travelling from Manly to the airport that's for sure.

Oh, Clovelly et al are like 30minute bus rides into the city I should point out. But they are lovely. If any sort of water view is your bag but you need to be walkable to the CBD (I mean like a 30minute walk or so), then Glebe/Pyrmont/Woolloomoolloo is your bet.

McMahon's Point. Kirribilli. Waverton. Walk across the bridge to the CBD, lots of local cafès in walking distance. Surprising mix of history and modern Sydney.

Cremorne Point, Mosman Bay, around the Zoo, Balmoral. Further from transport and may or may bot have access to transport and cafes depending on where you are. Also nice to stroll around.

Places around the eastern suburbs are more likely to have a nightclub / publife vibe if that's what you are seeking to avoid
