Help us name our new kitty, please

Hey, MeFi, it's time for another episode of everyone's favorite game show Name That Cat!

Ligerpants and I just got a cat. She is about 3.5 months old. She seems to have a pretty calm disposition--and played with and hung out with lots of new people all day in my office. When she came home, she played with us for a bit, at one point playing with three toys at once. Then she went under the dresser and has been hiding since then. Therefore, we only have only one decent picture.

I have one name in mind (which Ligerpants doesn't care for) and she has a few ideas, but is not committed to any. Please give us your suggestions. Thank you.

Response by poster: In case the picture doesn't work, she is a black shorthair cat with green eyes.

I think this is the correct image link.

She is precious! My family has a similar-looking cat that they wouldn't let me name "Biscotti", so I vote for that. Or Millicent.

capricorn, Millicent is great. Millie!

Morsel? Frances? Lucy? Alice? Hyacinth? Bubble?

Black cats are the best cats!

Response by poster: I won't threadsit, but I must mention that Millicent, Melinda, Millie, Mel or anything like that is WAY too similar to the names of both her mommies to work.

After the world's blackest stuff ever. As discussed previously. The name comes from "Vertically Aligned NanoTube Arrays" but no need for kitty to know that.

Ebony. I have a white cat named Ivory and if I ever get a black cat, it'll be Ebony.

Best answer: Her color reminds me of a witches cat, which made me immediately think of Minerva McGonagall from Harry Potter. I like the duality of the name (with the goddess) because she's a pretty regal looking, kitty too.

So Minerva.

Our beautiful black girl is Clawdia.

Aww... She looks so much like my late buddy Charlie, also a black cat. (I miss him.)

And since I always thought Charlie was the best name - and unisex enough - I'm submitting that. In hopes that there'll be another cheeky, cuddly black cat called Charlie somewhere in the world, indulging in kitty hijinks.

She looks like my recently-departed Cinders (female with quite the personality), so I vote for that.

She is the night sky. Here are some names relating to the night sky. I see her as a Leila, but Ajambo is an equally good fit. Amaya doesn't match quite as well, but she is definitely a *cloudy* night sky so that, too, could work.

Or perhaps she is a blackened craspedia, but then how would you feel calling "Crassie! Crassie!" last thing at night and having people say "...did you mean Cassie? What is so crass about her? She seems very demure to me."

Or perhaps you could just call her Kinfolk after the thread that inspired that second suggestion.

Or for no obvious reason other than the letter "Z" is the same shade of black (IMO), you could call her Zinaida. Zina for short.

Concatulations! Is Ligerpants off the table for the kitty's name? Because that would be pretty cute.
posted by areaperson at 12:20 PM on March 19, 2016

Response by poster: areaperson: Ligerpants is my fiancée/one of kitty's parents, so that won't work. Unless she's Ligerpants, Jr. I guess?

Update on kitten: she has emerged and is exploring. She is very enthusiastic about playing with toys and everything else she encounters, and we think she's trying to turn the doorknob. She may be very smart. Uh oh.

Yes, I meant Ligerpants in honor of the parent. I just think it's cute for a kitty.

I have a very smart black female cat named Chaos and it suits her perfectly. Bonus, if you get another cat you can name him/her Strife. There's no better name for a pair of cats than Strife and Chaos.

Short for 'equinox' to commemorate the time you got her, and because it's Latin for 'night', of which she is a tiny living piece.

When I looked at her picture, the name Slinky jumped into my head. Kinda dumb, but sometimes dumb names just fit, even when the car is smart. That's why I have a cat named Peanut, even though I would normally never name a pet anything that dumb.

Response by poster: Thanks so much, MetaFilter friends!

When we realized and posted about how smart this little girl is, we also had the idea to name her after Ada Lovelace. And then bile and syntax's comment moved Ada up on our list.

She's also starting to emerge from her little cave more and yesterday jumped on the bed for playtime with Ligerpants, and later for petting from us both. And she snuggled really close to both of us. She still gets skittish when one of us stands up suddenly, but seems to be on her way to becoming a very friendly and affectionate cat.

Therefore, she is Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovableness, styled The Right Honourable Augusta Ada, Countess of Lovableness. We're going to call her Ada Lovebug for short.
