Inside the Beltway Birthday Dinner

I need to pick a place in DC for dinner on my birthday! I'm the type that usually follows the whims of others and not the best at taking the lead on planning. Help!

To give you a sense of the sort of places I enjoy, I've had the best time at The Coupe, Stomping Ground (Alexandria), ChurchKey, Open City, and Busboys and Poets. Ideally there would be a lively but laid-back atmosphere on the Tuesday that we go. I prefer beer, friends prefer wine - it would be nice to have some good options for both. We're early and mid twenties - without a lot of spending money. I don't really have a neighborhood in mind, but the more metro-accessible, the better. Thank you!

Founding Farmers? I love Open City and Founding Farmers has similar prices and equally tasty food, but it's slightly less casual. Fantastic food, especially their breads and pastas, which are made in house. You can see the menu here, including drinks. I don't drink alcohol but I can vouch that their scratch sodas are amazing. Easy walk from Foggy Bottom or Farragut North or West (it's in the IMF building).

I think you might like Brookland's Finest. Entrees are a bit pricey, but sandwiches and appetizers are fairly reasonably priced. I think it hits a similar vibe to Open City and the Coupe, but the aesthetics are a little closer to Churchkey. I was impressed with the food and beer when I was there, and a friend of mine who's into wine is a regular. It's about a 10 minute walk from the Brookland Metro.

I was going to say Founding Farmers. I still have dreams about their Yankee Pot Roast.

I cannot recommend Sixth Engine enough for what you're looking for.

Agreed with Founding Farmers and adding the very spiritually similar District Commons. Also I have a gazillion more recommendations:

Basically any of Churchkey's sister restaurants in Neighborhood Restaurant Group will be a great choice. Rustico is my favorite (either location) and is definitely pretty reasonably priced especially for a birthday dinner.

I would also highly recommend Lincoln or its sister restaurant, Teddy and the Bully Bar. Haven't been to their pizza place, Declaration, yet, but it looks excellent.

Speaking of pizza: I personally had my own birthday dinner this past year at District of Pi; as long as you like pizza this is a surefire bet. Consistently awesome beer list. If Italian-style is more your thing than Chicago-style, try Paradiso.

Finally, since it's a Tuesday and you therefore probably won't need reservations (they don't take them), Compass Rose (and get the khachapuri).
