Things to do in Times Square NYC area on SHORT notice?

My friend and I are going to be on standbye for a show tonight in the time square area. (It's sold out, but sometimes people get in on stanbye). We won't find out until showtime, (8pm) whether we'll be able to get in. If we don't get in, what else can we do to make it a night?

Can't make another show since it will be too late for that. Would rather stay away from things like just going out to eat (which we are going to do anyway) or watching a movie (because we did that last week). It actually doesn't even have to be in Times Square really, but since we'll be there anyway...

There are so many things to do in NYC that are not films or eating, but for some reason, I can't come up with anything that doesn't have to be planned out in advance.

Walk up to Central Park (via Fifth Avenue maybe). It's a gorgeous day.

I would definitely leave the Times Square area if you don't wind up going to the show. It's just crowded and unpleasant to walk around there; there's no reason to be there if you're not going to the theater (or you need to catch a train there).

If you're at all interested in live music, most of those shows begin well after 8 PM. The Mercury Lounge is on East Houston; wander over to 42nd and 6th and take the F train to 2nd Avenue. Once the show is over, tons of stuff in the East Village will still be open. (Similar idea: Webster Hall, on East 11th Street).

There's bowlmor or lucky strike lanes if you're interested in bowling. Madame Tussaud wax museum too. There's also mud sweat and tears pottery (make your own pottery), not sure how late they're open.

The problem is that many other shows will be starting around the same time, and the late museum hours will be ending shortly after that. How about Top of the Rock? I imagine it's quite striking at night. Then somewhere for civilized cocktails.

(Good luck with Hamilton. ;))

How about comedy? Comedy Cellar has a 9:30 show, and they probably wouldn't sell out on a Thursday. Not times square, but easy to get to. UCB East Village is more of a trek, but they have standup at 9:30.

Never fear, there will be people around trying to get you to go to $AnotherPlay at $ASmallerTheater that starts soon.

The Museum of Sex. Not as tacky as you suspect. We did it as a mom and (adult) daughter thing. http://www.museumofsex.com

(If you're willing, OP, I'd be really curious to hear what you and your friend wound up doing.)
