Ad-hoc networking problems

Help me connect my laptop wirelessly to a desktop with a hardwire connection and a pci wireless card.

So I've done this before with laptops that were usually both xp with built in wireless cards but this time I have my laptop on XP and a desktop on 2000. I bought a Belkin PCI Wireless Card and installed it, created a profile with Ad-hoc, turned on Internet Connection Sharing for the LAN connection. Yet I still can't get an IP from the connection to share internet. The laptop does connect to the ad-hoc connection though. Help me use my purty laptop instead of this aging desktop that must be shared with others.

Try reading through this. It's pretty informative, and it may provide the missing bit to what you're trying to do.

the XP firewall can stop an internet connection working, even though the network is. Try disabling that.
