I just bought a video ipod (5th gen) 60 GB HDD

How do I reset it to factory defaults?

This is my first Apple product, and my computers are all Windows.

I bought it used (of course) on ebay. I was amazed that the seller didn't reset it to factory defaults to get rid of his/her music (I think that's technically illegal to transfer the songs and video.) Not that I care about that crap (because I can't stand the music and videos), I just want the darn thing reset to factory defaults so I don't have to put up with the previous owner's stuff lying in wait for me.

AFAIK, it's an Apple ipod fifth gen video with a 60 GB HDD. I had to blow my own money to get a new battery installed because the seller was a lying a-hole and the old battery wouldn't take a charge (I'm guessing because the old battery was spent.). I'm not interested in video so much, but it has more than enough space to hold my current music collection. I recently bought a new car with a USB port and a 3.5mm or 1/8" aux input.

My main question is how do I reset this thing to a factory default state?

And, as a Windows user, do I have to use itunes? Even if I have to, I can load it up with my own mp3s, right?

Doesn't itunes totally suck on a windows OS? That's been my limited experience in the past.

Oh! Also, does the ipod support a lossless encoder like FLAC?

Any suggestions, Mefites?

Many thanks to one and all!

You can use iTunes to reformat the iPod.
There are iPod plugins for other media players such as WinAmp and Foobar.
iTunes pretty much sucks on every OS! You can use your own MP3s, though.
The iPod should (not sure; might be too old) support ALAC which is like Apple's version of FLAC. You can encode to that format in iTunes.
As for suggestions: that 60 GB HDD is going to die someday, so maybe take a look at these and replace the HDD with some cheap SD cards (and this adapter board if that happens?

I believe that MediaMonkey can sync with iPods. It is a vast improvement over iTunes in every way.
