Snowy Tokyo Day Trip?

Our family will be in Tokyo during the first week of February, and we thought this might be a good time for the kids (ages 7 and 2) to see snow for the first time. If we hopped on a train in Tokyo in the morning, is there a good place we could hop off and--without too much additional transportation--end up somewhere where we could slide down a hill on something, toss a few snowballs, and make a snowperson? Ideally we’d like to make it back to Tokyo the same day, but will consider staying overnight.

We’ve found several ski resorts that seem easily accessible by shinkansen, but they seem a little extravagant for our needs. (Though, if one of those is especially worth considering, please let us know.)

Our Japanese is a little rusty, but assume we can manage train tickets, buses, and taxis. Thank you!

Nikko is easily accessible from Tokyo and there's also all the temples to see around, but get warm clothes for everyone.

May be a little ambitious, and a little touristy, but Hakone will give you both snow and a great chance for a crystal-clear Fuji viewing.

Seconding Hakone for Fuji views and beautiful lake, or Takaosan - which has a lovely chair lift and is actually inside Tokyo, accessible from Shinjuku station
