Help me wrangle my ipod classic

Can someone point me to the world's most clear, step-by-step tutorial for getting the music from my iPod classic to my computer with Windows 10? I'm having trouble following the various instructions I've found that date back a few years. Click for my music storage anxieties within.

I'm setting up a new computer running Windows 10 and would like to use this opportunity to
1) get the music from my ipod to my hard drive with the least amount of tears and expense
2) once everything is copied, find an alternative to itunes.

I tried downloading the highly recommended MediaMonkey and found it very confusing, and all of the tutorials were several years old and didn't seem to match what I was seeing with my interface. I'm fine getting the songs from my ipod to itunes as long as I can then get all of my updated itunes library into a different music manager in anticipation of that sad day when my 2005 Classic gives up the ghost. Please explain it to me like I'm someone who loves reaally detailed instructions for each glacial step of the process.

Best answer: So you want to copy all the mp3s from your iPod to your PC, is that correct? Because I have the same iPod as you and have done this! The following is what worked for me:

1. When your iPod is connected, go into iTunes and make sure "enable disk use" is ticked in the iPod > Summary section of iTunes

2. Go to "My Computer" and open your iPod drive.

3. Click "View" and then tick "Hidden items"

4. This should reveal a folder called "iPod_Control". Open that, and then open the "Music" folder.

5. There should be a bunch of folders all full of music files. They may have weird filenames, but the metadata contained in them is correct, so they will show up correctly in your new media player. Copy these folders to your PC.
