Viper Remote Car Start - 2016 car - novice question

My questions boils down to: "What hardware do I need for a Viper Remote Smartstart to work with a 2016 Honda Odyssey?" I don't know much about cars and I'm trying to figure out what the least amount I have to spend to get a car to remote start

I'm speaking as a novice, but from what research I've done...there are two pieces of hardware - a remote bypass (like the dball 2) and the viper module.

Viper makes several modules - including a standalone "smart starter" that can work via smartphone. They have other models where their smart starter is an add-on.

To do this you need their starter module and a bypass.
The common bypass is the Dball 2. Except the Dball 2 doesn't seem to be compatible with the 2016 Odyssey. According to the local installer, the alternative is to use the Flashlogic equivalent - but means buying a far more expensive Viper product.

Literally, seconds before I was asked for a deposit, I was told that I needed to buy a more expensive model. So, doing my due diligence, I'd try here, where someone might be able to help.

Does this car have a push-button ignition? Most shops charge more to install a remote start in such cars.

Response by poster: Yes, it does have a push button ignition. But that's not the price factor here.

If it was the 2015 car, I'd be fine.

The 2016 isn't supported by the DBall2 model - it has to be the flashlogic. Which means a different Viper system - with loads of extras that I have zero desire for.

Well, how much is this going to cost? What other alternatives have you looked at?

Honda offers an option for $400.

Response by poster: Honda's option is one way, fob based. it's overpriced and overpriced from the dealer. The dealer (like most) are offering an aftermarket that's cheaper than the Honda version, but equally poor in it's functionality. Both are over $500

The Viper Smart solution is $300 some installed; the version they claim they need is $400+ the smart option. The upgraded model includes quite a bit of useless crap.

I'm looking for two way and smartphone based. I've done a fair set of research - I've gone farther than metafilter, registering at two honda Odyssey forums and posting the question to /r/cars on reddit.

Buy the option from Honda. If you're trying to save money on a car, don't buy a new one in January.

Today's remote start systems are intimately involved with the vehicle's security systems. Some aftermarket systems deal with this by going around the security system, which I think is unacceptable. My advice is to either get the automaker's system or go without.

Honestly, it sounds like you're worried about nickels and dimes compared to the cost of a brand new Odyssey.

Response by poster: I'm not worried about the cost.

It's pretty simple: I'm looking for someone who knows about installing remote starters.

Either you or you don't.

There are two models - one with crap I don't want or need.

It's no different than asking for advice from another doctor. I'm looking to find an expert to tell me "no, it's not possible, here's how this works" or "yes, here's how this works."
