Therapist recommendations in NYC

Hello all, Yet another therapist recommendation question. This time my own!

I'm dealing with a messed up job situation that has sent me into a loop of depression, anxiety, and procrastination that I'm finding really hard to break out of. This situation also dragged out traumatic experiences that I never really processed, so in b/t that and the everyday abuse of my job, I'm in bad shape.

Short-term I'm looking for help in keeping my head straight while I apply to new jobs. Long-term can wait until I'm in a safer place.

So I guess I'm looking for therapists with experience in CBT and understands trauma and abuse, and are cool to guys who've experienced it. Preferably they're decent people, because I had a few bad experiences with therapists in the past, but I figure I should try again.

Thanks in advance.

The Psychology Today Find a therapist tool might be useful.

Depression sucks. Good for you, taking action and looking forward. Good luck!

I've had good experiences with the Brooklyn Center for Psychotherapy; I don't know if the therapists I've talked to there have specific experience with trauma and abuse, but it's the kind of practice where you do an intake interview and you get assigned to a therapist based on your specific needs and concerns.

Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy is a similar place with an intake interview. They accept some insurance and have a sliding scale. Not sure exactly where you are but they are near columbus circle.

I've had good luck finding therapists with Kenwood Psychological Services.

Response by poster: Thanks for the link, merejane. What types of therapy do they offer? I can't find too much info on them, and my cynical fear is they're like a Scientology front group.

Trust me, gehenna_lion, Kenwood has nothing to do with Scientology!

Check out the website for the types of therapy they offer and also an explanation of how they match clients with therapists. Basically, they have a roster of private practitioners who offer different kinds of therapy, including, I am sure, CBT. You explain to Kenwood what you are looking for in a therapist, and they will do their best to match you with one who has the appropriate credentials and experience. They also take into account your financial situation.

Kenwood was recommended to me years ago by a counselor at my daughter's high school, Hunter College High School. The counselor said a number of Hunter families had used Kenwood to find a therapist, and were happy with whom they had found. That was our experience as well.

The specific therapist whom we found through Kenwood was Dr. Richard Shadick, a psychologist. In addition to having a private practice, Dr. Shadick is also Director at Pace University’s Counseling Center. He has a lot of experience working with college students, but treats other ages as well. I see on his website that he has expertise in treating survivors of trauma. He was wonderful, and a perfect match for our family; I recommend him highly.

If you think he would be a match for you as well, you could of course contact him directly. But I do recommend Kenwood's therapist matching service.
