Should I port my google voice number to my carrier?

I was given an iPhone for Christmas this year. Until now, my entire smartphone experience has been with Android phones that work seamlessly with google voice. Using the gv number on my new phone feels pretty clunky. Should I just port my number to my carrier?

I receive calls on the main phone app, but must make them through hangouts if I want them to show up as the gv number on caller ID. Also, unrelated to the new phone, I've had issues with some gv calls not getting through for the past couple years. Friends also tell me they'd appreciate if I were on iMessage.

So, I've got reasons to make the switch, but I don't find them super compelling. Are there reasons I shouldn't? I'm not using gv to forward to multiple phones, or any of the really in depth features. I'm just really used to using it at this point.

I like my number, and want to keep it; I don't want to just switch to the carrier number I already have.

You can port, get a new gv number and still use the account for voicemail transcription.

If you don't want to port, you can be reached via imessage by associating an email address to it and letting your friends know what the email address is.

You may also be able to use the google voice app instead of hangouts.

But, like you said, if you're not doing any fancy forwarding or relying on free sms from gv then just port it over.

I ported a few years ago when I switched to an iPhone. Before that, I was changing cell carriers regularly on Android devices and it was great to not have to change my number.

The main difference for me is not having the transcripts for VM. I now just don't bother to listen to my VM.

iOS has similar features for blocking people ( but not the "this number is out of service" feature)
