I have recently gotten back into cardio and have signed up for a Spartan a Race in April...yeah me! Now the problem...I think I have extensor tendinitis in my left foot. About a mile into a run/walk, the top of my foot up into my ankle starts to burn. It doesn't stop me, but damn it hurts. I have tried loosening my laces, ice, pain killers...no help. Is there anything other than stopping the cardio? Thanks hive!

Sounds obvious, but have you been to a sports physiotherapist? It may be relatively simple to fix with stretching and strengthening, but you should take it to a professional.

My experience with mild tendonitis is that it doesn't stop me from running. (The usual line is that if it doesn't impact your stride, then it is okay to run.) What you describe doesn't sound mild at all and I wouldn't try to run on it without a professional opinion. Don't screw around with it-- get some help.

In the meantime, you can cross train on a fitness bike or with water aerobics in a pool. It's disappointing, I know, but better than a long term injury.

Try a different shoe? I recently had a big toe injury that was the direct result of exercising in worn out shoes. I've also had knee, calf and foot injuries from wearing the wrong type of shoe.

Yes, try a different shoe. Once something like this starts, you often need a big change to get rid of it (because otherwise it can easily get continuously reinjured and never have time to heal).

Orthotics saved my feet. Pricey but worth it.

It should stop you, if it hurts. That's what pain is there to tell you to do. Stop aggravating it and let your foot rest for a while (and 2nd seeing your physio).
