Questions to ask artists?

What sort of questions would you like to ask of a couple of artists who've just completed a project, one where they produced a drawing every day for a year?

Did you ever feel like quitting the project?

What did you draw the day you felt like quitting?

What did you draw on your birthday?

Did you draw anything special on other meaningful anniversaries?

How is the finished project different from what you expected when you started?

What did you learn from the project that you want to take with you into your future work?

Did the quality of drawings go up or down over the year, or did it remain the same?

Which was your favorite day to be drawing vs. which is your favorite drawing?
Which was your least favorite day to be drawing vs. which is your least favorite drawing?
What happened the day after you finished the year? How did it feel to wake up and know you didn't have to draw that day?

Do you miss it? What did you learn? Do you recommend it as an exercise?

How did they pick what to draw? Were they drawing from life or from reference or from imagination? How much time did they spend each day? What time of day did they draw & how did it fit into their day's routine? Did they ever return to a day's drawing later? What materials did they use (drawing medium & surface); if it varied, which did they use most frequently and how did they choose? Did they use materials/tools that were new to them? What did they learn about them? What did they do with the accumulation of drawings that resulted from this - where/how are they storing them, how much space do they take up, are they planning on keeping them forever?

Artist Chuck Close said "Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work". In light of this project, what's your take on that quote?

How did your desire to draw on a given day affect the outcome of that day's drawing?

How did this project affect your ability to be disciplined in other areas of your life?

Could you show/tell me about any specific drawing that surprised you or somehow stood out from the rest?

Going forward, do you plan to make this kind of commitment to any other aspects of your life?

How did your daily lives affect the drawings?
Did you discover any fixations you didn't know you had?
Has this changed how you look at other people's art?
