Gotta Dance!

Looking for a free/low cost, metro accessible space in MD/DC for a small group of dancers to practice on an impromptu basis in the evenings during the week.

I'm a dance student and I'm looking for free/very inexpensive space for me and a few others (max 10 most often 3-5) to have impromptu practice sessions during the week after work, between 7-9 pm. It needs to be within a 5 minute walk from a DC/MD metro station (Red Line toward Shady Grove) for those who don't drive and have some parking availability for those that do.

All of us have memberships that allow us to use the Montgomery County recreation centers, but the barriers to informal access are high: all the space is already used for structured classes, high rental rates and/or convoluted reservations requirements (coming in person to make reservation, first-come, first-serve even if reserved, pre-payment, must be an organized group with non-profit status etc.). We just need a room, an electric outlet and open space. Mirrors aren't necessary. We'd move existing furniture and return the room to it's original state when done.

Ideally, I'd call around on a Monday to the group to see who's interested and we'd set a day and time that week and we'd meet. It wouldn't be every day or even every week. The cost would be low enough that all could pitch in 3-5 bucks, or someone could pay by themselves if necessary.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Try a church or two in the area you want --- most churches have meeting halls (in addition to their sanctuaries) that are often used by groups like Scouts or AA or whatever.

Yoga studios? (Or other private exercise studio?) Some in the DC metro area charge closer to $50/hour, but some are considerably cheaper, so it may be worth calling around to check out your options.

Alternatively, possibly meeting space at a public library? Though in that case there may be requirements to be open to the public.

Nobody in your group has a finished basement they could donate to the cause?

Possibly check out local Meetups, and see where other similar groups meet?

Have you taken a look at The Dance Loft on 14? They have a ton of studios and rent to a bunch of local groups. They don't say what their rates are, but I bet they're negotiable. It is not super Metro accessible, but it is extremely accessible by bus (close to both 16th St and 14th St bus lines).
