How to make baked pea pods as delicious as Trader Joe's.

How can I come close to replicating the deliciousness that is Trader Joe's Contemplates Inner Peas in my own kitchen?

As you can see here, the ingredients are pretty simple. According to the packaging, they are baked. But how is that tasty, flaky crunchiness achieved?

Best answer: According to this article about Snapeas, the ingredients are blended and formed into pea pod shapes, and then baked (or fried).

From eating them, I assume they're kind of like Cheetos made from pea flour. I don't think we home cooks have much chance of doing that without industrial equipment.

Response by poster: Ahhhhh, I see. I was naively buying into them being whole peas, which in retrospect was pretty silly.

This article talks about the puffing gun, a precursor to the continuous puffing machine shown in the video above.

You could approximate this by dehydrating a pea paste to the right consistency and then deep-frying to get the air bubbles, but it would be much fattier than baked crisps.
