Whose eyes are these?

In the music video for the song "Birdhouse in Your Soul," people wear masks made from an image that looks like a halftone black and white reproduction of a painting. This mask can also be seen in this image of They Might Be Giants. What painting are these eyes from?

It looks more like a detail from a photo of William Burroughs late in life, but I can't find anything confirming this.
