Vancouver shopping - where should I go?

I have a free afternoon in Vancouver and would like to do a little shopping. I'd like to find one area I can go to for some shopping. What I'm looking for: stuff for kids, women's clothes and (maybe) food stuff I can take back to the US. Ideally stuff that is a little different then what I'd find in the US, and not ridiculously expensive. What neighborhood or street should I go to? Any specific store recommendations?

Best answer: I'd recommend Main Street, starting at E. 17th and working your way south. There's lots of the kinds of things you're looking for, and it's easily accessible from downtown if you take a Skytrain to Main Street/Science World Station and then the #3 Main Street bus going south.

Granville Island Toy Company (their original location is still on Granville Island, another place worth exploring)
Smoking Lily--women's and kids' clothes, housewares
Regional Assembly of Text--stationery, letterpress, kids' stuff
Front and Company--really great upscale consignment, some new
Lucky's Books and Comics
Strategies Games and Hobbies

There are quite a few little cafes around that also sell small boutique food items you can take home. And if you like dim sum, Sun Sui Wah is in that area and has good dim sum.

Best answer: If you're on Main Street, Bird On A Wire is also worth a look - it's almost all local and B.C. vendors.

This may be too obvious but I've gotten people gifts from The Bay (either their signature HBC Collection or their Canadian Olympic collection, like the red mittens) and they have loved them. Downtown is the obvious choice since it's such a large store but they have stores in all the suburbs as well as one at Oakridge Center (W. 41st & Cambie).

If you're looking for stuff for kids, kidsbooks on Broadway is unbeatable.
