where in lower Manhattan or possibly Midtown today can my friend find a great store with lots of coloring books and crayons and the like?

"I'm helping to build a care package for an 8-year-old girl who will shortly be going through chemo and the folks at my work are putting together a care package. We've already got everything we were looking to add but I'd like to throw in some coloring books which I thought would be a nice sedate activity. I've already been to Playing Mantis in Tribeca and Kidding Around on west 15th; is there anywhere else I can try?"

Barnes & Noble on 97 Warren St in Tribeca.

The Barnes & Nobles north of Union Square (17th & Broadway-ish).

There's also a Micheal's on 6th Ave. and 21st street that has a bunch of coloring books.

Kinokuniya (across from Bryant Park) would be a great place for fun art supplies. They have adorable erasers and pencils and things like that in the downstairs area. Not sure about coloring books but I'd ask.

TC is right. In addition to the best (cutest, girliest) art supplies possible, Kinokuniya also has a lot of more advanced coloring books for the post-Elmo crowd, and an 8-year-old is probably advanced enough to be interested in them. Lots of tourism-type books like Color Manhattan and Colour-In Australia and such, as well as all those hip adult meditation books in which you color mandalas and such.

Bookberries on Lex was great for this too, but I believe it's closed now.

Have you considered The Strand or that getting too far towards Midtown?

Came in to suggest Kinokuniya as well, and I don't even live in the US. While you are there please pick her up some pretty packs of origami paper, it's a great little hobby and she can learn from YouTube vids, takes up no more space than that you can put it in your pocket and do it in your lap. Simple models are simple even with a foggy brain or tired eyes, make lovely little gifts and brighten up a space.
