Help me track changes in InDesign

I'm working in Story Editor view. I have the track changes toolbar up. Track changes in all stories in on (I also tried track changes in this story), but no matter what I do, I either can't see the changes (despite using the eyeball/view changes button) or it's not registering the changes I'm making. What am I doing wrong?

In case it mattes, I've got a trial version of InDesign CC. (If I can get it to work, and earn the assignment, then I'll get the full version.) I'm on a Win 8.1 machine. I've used ID before for changing text (I leave graphics and layout to others) but I've never used this function before.

Best answer: Did you set up a user account within ID? Do that first (file>user).

Make sure track changes button is on, and with cursor still in story, hit Ctrl Y to bring up the changes panel (it'll show your changes here).

Do you have it in preview mode? (That hides the bleed area and paragraph marks—and things like tracked changes—and shows it as it would appear on a print.)

Go to View/Screen Mode and make sure normal is checked.

Response by poster: The View/Screen mode is in normal. The user name was set. I even changed the colour of the edits to something that would show up more on the document.

Control Y (very helpful) shows me all of the other changes made to the file before I got it buy not mine. I'm starting to wonder if Adobe cripples some of the features in the preview state.

Response by poster: Well for no apparent reason it all seems to be working. Of course before it started functioning, I renamed the file, shut down the computer, went back through ID and reset everything I had previously set, and voila, now it's functioning.

I'm giving Klaxon a best answer because I didn't know that keyboard shortcut before and I love learning new key combos as I've very, very keyboard oriented.
