Need help identifying an un-google-able quote

Who said this: "A friend is better than a dollar. Cuz if you have a dollar, but ain't got a friend, then the money won't spend."

I heard this spoken quote in a mix on a radio show in something like late 1993 or 1994. I know this because the show featured songs from Black Moon's Enta Da Stage. The DJ, Bobby Hill, kept dropping this quote, which sounded like it was from an old bluesman of some kind, in between songs. I recorded the show and listened to it for years. Could have been a sample from a movie or an album? There was more to it, but what I quoted above is all I can remember.

This page attributes a similar quote to Sam Lightnin' Hopkins -- maybe that'll help you track down a more definitive source.

Best answer: Sorry, I should have linked directly to the comment that attributes the quote. Here.

Response by poster: That's strong googlefoo. The voice sounds right! Listening to some live albums now. Probably on one somewhere!
