Help me ID a fantasy book from the early 80s

I have vague memories of a book that I enjoyed in my misspent youth. It probably came out in the early 80s but maybe late 70s. It was a fantasy novel that featured demons trapped in rings. Memory (vague) says some of the demons may have been friendly-ish and just looked like small flames. Google searches for demon+ring+fantasy have been unhelpful but last time I asked here the first response nailed it. Can you do it again MeFi?

Howl's Moving Castle? Doesn't hit all of your points, but has demon/spirits in form of flames.

Lord of Light by Roger Zelazny was published in 1967 but did feature demons who look like small flames and who are trapped by the main character, in ring-like electrical charges.

Master of the Five Magics?

I don't remember the plot or how rings are involved, but when I read your description I immediately thought of Master of the Five Magics. Maybe my subconscious knows something my conscious mind doesn't. Here's the cover image.

Response by poster: Sorcerer's Son seems very likely as the Wikipedia description included a bit about freeing demons in return for service and that seems pretty familiar.

Howl's Moving Castle was excellent but I didn't know there was a book until you linked it.

Lord of Light sounds interesting but not at all familiar.

The cover of Master of Five Magics looks really familiar but the Wikipedia summary doesn't ring any bells.

Thank you all, I'm going to find a copy of Sorcerer's Son and see if that isn't it. I'll probably pick up the rest of those books as well.
